Governor Mbah Unveils Modern Waste Management Fleet to Drive Cleaner, Climate-Friendly Enugu
The Enugu State Government has taken another step toward strengthening environmental sanitation and urban management with the unveiling of a new fleet of modern waste management equipment. Governor Peter Mbah formally presented the fleet on Tuesday at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, describing the initiative as a critical component of his administration’s broader development agenda focused on cleanliness, climate resilience, and economic competitiveness.
The newly unveiled assets include 10 state-of-the-art refuse compactors, seven automated road sweepers, and 200 large-capacity waste dumpsters. According to the governor, the equipment is expected to significantly enhance the state’s capacity for efficient waste evacuation, street cleaning, and proper disposal practices across urban and semi-urban areas.
Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Governor Mbah said the acquisition went beyond the mere purchase of machinery and represented a deliberate investment in Enugu State’s environmental infrastructure. He stressed that environmental sustainability remains a core pillar of his administration’s vision for growth, public health, and urban development.
“Today’s event is a demonstration of our commitment to building the Enugu State of the future,” the governor said. “With the introduction of these compactors, automated sweepers, and modern dumpsters, we are advancing a vision that places cleanliness, order, and sustainability at the heart of our development agenda.”

Governor Mbah explained that the additional refuse compactors, working alongside existing ones, would ensure faster and more effective waste evacuation, reducing the accumulation of refuse in residential and commercial areas. He added that the automated street sweepers would help transform Enugu into a city that aligns more closely with global standards of urban cleanliness, while the newly deployed dumpsters would discourage indiscriminate dumping by providing accessible waste collection points for residents.
The governor reiterated that environmental reform is central to the success of any modern city, noting that waste-ridden environments undermine public health, deter tourism, and weaken investor confidence. “A clean city is a competitive city. A clean city is a healthy city. A clean city is a city ready for growth,” he said, linking the waste management initiative to the state’s broader goals of infrastructure expansion, industrialisation, and investment attraction.
Governor Mbah also called on residents to support government efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal habits. He urged citizens to make proper use of the dumpsters provided and to refrain from littering streets, drains, and open spaces, stressing that sustainable environmental management requires active public participation.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, described the unveiling as a landmark moment in Enugu State’s waste management journey. He recalled that the state won a national award last year as the cleanest state capital in Nigeria, attributing the recognition to the administration’s sustained focus on cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
Prof. Ugwu highlighted several policy measures introduced under the current administration, including the enactment of the Enugu State Environmental Protection Law in 2024 and the approval of the Climate Change Policy and Action Plan. He said the new equipment would significantly boost operational efficiency and ensure a healthier environment for residents, adding that trained operators were already in place and that deployment would begin immediately.
The Managing Director of the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA), Mr. Richard Onaga, also commended the governor for what he described as a forward-looking investment in modern waste management systems. He assured residents that the agency was prepared to maximize the benefits of the new equipment to sustain and improve sanitation standards across the state.
Public reactions to the unveiling have been mixed, with many residents praising the administration for visible improvements in waste management, while others called for broader attention to related infrastructure challenges such as road conditions and market sanitation. Nonetheless, the initiative has reinforced the Mbah administration’s emphasis on environmental governance as a foundation for economic growth and improved quality of life in Enugu State.
