Governor Otti Commissions Key Infrastructure Projects in Abia, Announces New SSG Appointment
The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has commissioned a series of infrastructure projects in Arochukwu Local Government Area, describing them as critical to improving connectivity, boosting local economies, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
During the commissioning ceremony, the governor also announced key leadership changes in his administration. He confirmed the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole as the substantive Secretary to the State Government (SSG), while the immediate past SSG, Professor Kenneth Kalu, was named President of the newly established Abia State Leadership Academy.
The commissioning event drew prominent figures from across the state and beyond, including former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, who was invited to officially inaugurate some of the completed projects. Ihejirika praised the governor’s administration for prioritizing infrastructure that directly benefits communities and improves inter-town connectivity.
He described the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads and bridges as essential infrastructure capable of transforming transportation and economic activities across the region. According to him, the projects would reduce travel time, improve access to rural communities, and stimulate local commerce.
The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, highlighted the historical challenges faced by residents due to poor road infrastructure. He noted that in the past, travelers often had to pass through neighboring Akwa Ibom State to reach Arochukwu due to the poor condition of internal roads. He commended Governor Otti for prioritizing the opening of access routes to both urban and rural communities.

Legislators representing the area also expressed appreciation for the administration’s intervention. Hon. Ibe Osonwa, representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, and Hon. Uchenna Okoro, representing Arochukwu State Constituency, described the commissioning as a significant milestone for the local government. They noted that the infrastructure projects would improve economic activities and enhance the living standards of residents.
Former Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, also described the occasion as a special day for the people of Arochukwu, expressing gratitude for what he termed “massive infrastructural interventions” in the area.
Community leaders and stakeholders were equally vocal in their praise. Chief James Umeh, founder of the UNUBIKO Foundation and a prominent indigene of the area, commended the governor for restoring the pride of the Abam clan through the reconstruction of key roads and the construction of a new bridge. He described the projects as long-awaited developments that would have lasting positive impacts on the community.
Umeh also publicly declared the support of his community for the governor’s future political ambitions, pledging financial and moral backing ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, residents of the area view the ongoing infrastructural transformation as evidence of responsive governance.
Chairman of the occasion and former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, recalled the history of the Omenuko Bridge, originally constructed during the British colonial era to connect Bende, then a colonial district headquarters. He lamented that the bridge had remained in a deteriorated state for decades under successive administrations, resulting in frequent accidents and significant hardship for commuters.
Agwu noted that many lives had been lost on the old bridge and that motorists often spent long hours navigating the difficult route, particularly during the rainy season. He described the completion of the new bridge and road network as a turning point that has transformed a once-dangerous passage into a modern, reliable route.
Traditional ruler Eze Aro, Dr. Eberechukwu Kanu, also praised the governor’s efforts, stating that the reconstruction of the Omenuko Bridge and Arochukwu road had effectively rewritten the narrative of neglect associated with the area. He offered prayers for the governor and expressed hope that the development would usher in sustained growth and prosperity.
The commissioning ceremony featured cultural displays by local groups, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm and appreciation for the projects. Residents and dignitaries alike described the developments as a major step toward improving infrastructure and economic opportunities across the region.
