Niger State Police Arrest 23-Year-Old Over Fatal Stabbing of Friend During Dispute Over Sachet Water
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Abdulazeez Abubakar, in connection with the fatal stabbing of his close friend, Sadiq Sani, aged 20, following a dispute over sachet water, commonly referred to as “pure water,” in Minna, the capital of Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2025, at about 7:40 p.m. in the Dutsen-Kura-Hausa area of Minna, along Adamawa Road. According to eyewitness accounts, the two young men, who were described as childhood friends and long-time residents of the area, became involved in an argument over sachet water intended for ablution as they prepared for the Maghrib prayer.
Residents who spoke to reporters said what began as a minor disagreement quickly escalated into a heated confrontation. Witnesses noted that neither party appeared willing to back down, and the exchange soon turned physical. During the altercation, Abdulazeez Abubakar allegedly drew a sharp object and stabbed Sadiq Sani, inflicting severe injuries.
Despite efforts by bystanders to intervene and rush the victim for medical assistance, Sadiq Sani reportedly succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. His death has left the local community in shock, with many residents struggling to understand how a dispute over something as seemingly trivial as sachet water could result in the loss of a young life.

“On 17/12/2025 at about 7:40 p.m., a report was received that there was a fight at Dutsen-Kura between one Abdulazeez Abubakar, 23 years, and Sadiq Sani, 20 years, both of Dutsen-Kura, Minna, which led to the death of Sani,” Abiodun said.
He added that police officers swiftly moved to the scene, arrested the suspect, and secured the area to prevent further violence. According to him, Abdulazeez Abubakar is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and necessary legal action.
