Job Title: Database Administrator

Job Brief

The Database Administrator (DBA) will be responsible for designing, installing, monitoring, maintaining, and performance-tuning production databases to ensure high availability, security, and data integrity. The role also involves developing and enforcing database policies, standards, and procedures that support business continuity and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop long-term strategic goals for production databases in collaboration with data owners and department managers

  • Work closely with application development teams to define database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance procedures

  • Design and implement redundancy, disaster recovery, and data archiving solutions to protect critical data assets

Acquisition & Deployment:

  • Research and recommend database technologies, products, services, and standards to support procurement and development initiatives

Operational Management:

  • Create data models and relational entity diagrams for new databases or enhancements to existing systems

  • Install, configure, and manage database and network components to ensure secure access and data integrity

  • Monitor and resolve database access, availability, and performance issues

  • Analyze stored procedures, execution times, and system metrics to improve efficiency

  • Optimize and manage physical data storage and capacity planning

  • Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems

  • Implement and maintain change control, testing, and deployment processes for database modifications

  • Support reporting needs and perform database transaction and security audits

  • Define and manage end-user access controls and security privileges

  • Develop best-practice routines and usage guidelines for database users

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior team members

  • Support multiple applications accessing shared databases

  • Write, debug, and optimize SQL scripts to support application development

Position Requirements

Education & Certification:

  • HND or University Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience as a Database Administrator

  • Professional certifications in Database Management and/or Administration from Microsoft or Oracle

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Strong understanding of database concepts, structures, principles, and best practices

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2008–2022), MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SAP HANA

  • Proven database tuning and troubleshooting skills

  • Experience with data processing flowcharting and documentation

  • Project management and SQL scripting experience

  • Programming skills are an added advantage

  • Knowledge of data privacy laws and best practices

  • Clear understanding of organizational goals and how database systems support them
